چکیده

In this paper we investigate for the first time the effect of the crosstalk introduced due to laser beam imaging in a freespace optical interconnect (FSOI) system. Due to the overfill of the transmitter microlens array by the vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) beam, one part of the signal is imaged by the adjacent microlens to another channel, possibly far from the intended one. Even though this causes increase in interchannel and intersymbol interference, to our knowledge this issue has been neglected so far. The numerical simulation has been performed using a combination of exact ray tracing and the beam propagation methods. The results show that some characteristics of stray-light crosstalk are similar to that of diffraction-caused crosstalk, where it is strongly dependent on the fill factor of the microlens, array pitch, and the channel density of the system. Despite the similarities, the stray-light crosstalk does not affect by an increase in the interconnection distance. As simulation models for optical crosstalk are numerically intensive, we propose here a crosstalk behavioural model as a useful tool for optimisation and design of FSOIs. We show that this simple model compares favourably with the numerical simulation models.

Analysis of optical channel cross talk for free-space optical interconnects in the presence of higher-order transverse modes.

We analyze the effect of cross-talk noise on the performance of free-space optical interconnects (FSOIs). In addition to diffraction-caused cross talk, we consider the effect of stray-light cross-talk noise, an issue that, to the best of our knowledge, was not addressed previously. Simulations were performed on a microlens-based FSOI system using the modal composition and beam profiles experime...

Comprehensive Evaluation of Crosstalk and Delay Profiles in VLSI Interconnect Structures with Partially Coupled Lines

In this paper, we present a methodology to explore and evaluate the crosstalk noise and the profile of its variations, and the delay of interconnects through investigation of two groups of interconnect structures in nano scale VLSI circuits. The interconnect structures in the first group are considered to be partially coupled identical lines. In this case, by choosing proper values for differen...

Design and Analysis of Free-Space Optical Interconnects

The continual development of more complex and efficient communication and computing systems has increased the demand of faster routing of information between elements such as gates, chips, and boards. With electronic interconnects fast approaching their limits, optical techniques seemed to be the best viable alternative. Free-Space Optical Interconnects (FSOIs) seemed to be able to solve the pr...

A Time Domain Approach for Avoiding Crosstalk in Optical Blocking Multistage Interconnection Networks

Crosstalk in Multistage Interconnection Networks can he avoided by ensuring that a switch is not used by two connections simultaneously. In order to support crosstalk-free communications among N inputs and N outputs, a space domain approach dilates an N x N network into one that is essentially equivalent to a 2 N x 2 N network. Path conflicts, however may still exist in dilated networks. This p...
